I remember the first time I wanted to experiment with fondant.. That was back in 2006, when we were still in the UK. Back then, I was already baking (very ugly looking) cupcakes and often dream about the time when I would be using fondant. I tried making marshmallow fondant.. My marshmallow was a disaster. So, project abandoned..
Until recently, when I've been getting my bake on! Eh? Haha, due to the recent baking streak, I figured I'd relive that ambition. It seemed easy enough on tv and youtube videos, I'm sure it's not that hard right?
Bahahahahaha.. Now I am no longer complaining if bakers charge you at least RM250 for fondant cakes. So tedious man! But FUN! The end result? Pure satisfaction! Initially I wanted to make fondant cake for the husband since it was his birthday last week. Busy schedules etc.. Didn't happen! He even had to order his own cake from the hotel. Ey, he was the one with the voucher ok! Haha so unromantic me.

Anddddd, since that didn't happen.. I promised myself that I would attempt a fondant cake, for my mil's birthday. It took me days of researching, non-stop video tutorials from youtube. Honestly, those kind bakers from youtube were my teachers! Considering the fact that I never went to any baking class, I thought it was a fair attempt. Can you see the unsightly bumps?

Although, I'm sure I could use a less sweet recipe for the fondant. Too sweet for my liking (and others, it seems).. Well, it was orange vanilla cake with orange buttercream icing. Hence, the natural sweetness from the oranges added up to the sugar levels of the buttermcream and coupled with the bagfull-of-icing fondant. You'll get a lifetime worth of diabetes covering what would've been a simple cake.

It's my first attempt guys, don't be fooled by the flowers. They were real flowers from the florist. I haven't reached that flower making stage just yet. Baby steps, please!
All in all, even if this one didn't particularly hit the 'best cakes' list, I'd pat my own back anyway. It took a lot of time, love and effort and at the very least, I was proud of myself for conquering my fear and taking the leap. Now, I think I'm quite hooked on perfecting the recipe and venturing on different ways make me organized when baking.
Really, 'organized baking' makes a difference. When I say 'organized baking', I mean baking in a systematical manner which eliminates the elements (for lack of a better word) of 'kelam kabutness' and less washing. Yeah, having to clean up after baking is probably the worst stage of the whole process.
Xx
P/s: in case you were wondering why I didn't use ready made fondant.. They're too expensive and most tastes like cardboard!
